Who You Are

The Assistant Principal Lawyer (Housing and Disrepair) is a senior leader within the Council, responsible for communicating the agreed direction and purpose of the legal service to motivate staff. You will lead your service area to deliver high performance, effectively plan and commission services, and set clear service standards. You are committed to the development and implementation of strategic goals that align with the Council’s priorities and long-term ambitions. You build effective relationships with partners and elected members, contribute as a senior member of the in-house legal team with a heavy caseload of complex legal work, and lead the management and supervision of junior staff.

What the Job Involves

The role involves carrying a caseload of complex legal work and providing comprehensive legal services to colleagues, schools, and local authority trading companies. You will advise on governance, decision-making, and constitutional matters, occasionally attending committee meetings. The role includes overseeing junior staff, ensuring billing and quality service delivery within financial constraints, and helping to develop and implement Council strategies, policies, and procedures. You will also participate in cross-department projects, lead legal projects, manage legal resources and spend, and deputize for the Principal Lawyer when required.

Skills

  • Qualified Solicitor of England and Wales, Barrister, CILEX, or equivalent
  • In-depth knowledge of housing litigation and other areas like Employment, Licensing, etc.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, or supervising staff
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to manage competing demands and meet deadlines
  • Innovative, problem-solving approach
  • Understanding of local government context and political landscape
